Audio Systems: missing buttons, soft logic, sending signals

Question
Hi, just bought a 2005 lariat with factory fitted 6cd changer unit and radio.
I have just realised the 2 little buttons (cd and am/fm)are missing I contacted the dealer and he was looking in to it but it appears they have been broken off and are actually a part of the whole unit.
Is this true or can I just get the buttons replaced somehow.
Thanking you in anticipation  David

Answer
The buttons are actually soft logic buttons and they are integrated into the panel membranes for sending signals to Integrated Circuit controlling functions.  I don't know the specific design of your unit (there are several versions that Ford used in that year) but it is not likely you can just replace the knob.

A good technician who understands the system may be able to repair it with a non-standard button or with fashioning a newly molded piece onto the system.  But, it will  take some investigation by a good technical person who can analyze it and make the proper determination.

In the worst case it may be cheaper to just replace the entire unit with a new one.

The above are places where you can review replacement radios.

And, www.crutchfield.com has an "outfit your car" where it will take you through the various aftermarket units that will fit your vehicle.

Hope this helps.
