Audio Systems: HDTV Panasonic 52, panasonic hdtv, vcr dvd player

Question
Intermittent picture goes out, on light blinks green. sometimes audio working quietly, sometimes not.  after about 45 seconds comes back on again. can happen several times in an hour or not happen for two or three hours.  tried unplugging for an hour then replugging but no change. seems to be plenty of space around it in cabinet. system is panasonic hdtv model PT52LCX65. hooked up through Comcast cable box with Panasonic vcr/dvd/ player attached as well. appreciate anything you can offer.

Answer
It must be determined if the problem is internal or external to the TV.  By internal we mean something defective inside the set.  By external we mean something not involving the tv, such as, a bad cable, broken connector, bad cable signal, etc.

Do this:  Play a dvd directly into the A/V inputs and see if you get good, reliable picture and sound. If so, it is likely the problem is in the cable system or your hookups between the cable box and the vcr/dvd box.  So, check them out carefully.  Do not run the cable through the vcr box; run it directly to one of the A/V inputs on the tv to see if that helps.

If you determine, after testing above, the tv is the defective piece of the puzzle try banging on the side, top and back of the set with your hand or fist. Many times a loose connection or cold solder joint will need to be brought back to life and this will often do it; at least it may prove whether or not there is an intermittent thing going on inside.

If it appears to be an intermittent thing you may get lucky and get it working reliably with a little whacking on the set, magazine under one corner of the chassis, etc.  But, chances are you will need the assistance of an expert who can get inside and take voltage measurements to track down the illusive gremlins.

Let me know if you have further thoughts.
