Audio Systems: factory amplifier complications, power amps, radio unit

Question
i have a 2003 chevy impala wih factory indash and factory amp. i recenly started my car an he radio didnt start..i checked the fuse and others.. then moments later he radio fought its way back in with tons of static amd fading in and out.. and now there is completly o sound coming out of the speakers. i checked all speakers and the all are fine..

Answer
Could be failure of either the power amps or the head unit.
(There are several different factory systems for the Impala, so you need to find out which system you have. If it is a Bose system or JBL system you probably have external amplifiers that feed the speakers.  On the cheaper system the amps are built into the head unit.)

It seems to be more likely the problem would be the head unit.  Repair could by simple if it is a failure of the tuner (they are famous for generating static) but if the same sound came out when playing the CD slot it would not be the tuner.

Often with a radio unit this old it is cheaper in the long run to just replace the head unit (if that is the problem).

If you are technical inclined and thinking about doing your own repair or replacement, go to www.cructhfield.com and work through their "outfit your car" section.  If you decide to replace the head, go to installer.com to find wiring harness adapters and such.

Let me know if you need more help after you get started.

PS: Often times it is worth a few bucks to just pull into an install/repair shop and have them check it out and tell you what the problem is.
