Audio Systems: Toshiba DVD/VCR cant see digital channels, qam tuners, antenna setup

Question
We have a new Toshiba D-VR650KU DVD/VCR combo unit, attached to the coax cable from our air antenna (not a cable to satellite. It's supposed to have NTSC, ATSC, and QAM tuners. But when the unit scans for channels it only finds analog channels...no digital channels!

According to the manual we're supposed to select "Cable" or "TV" as the tuning mode for the auto-scan...but this thing doesn't show "TV" as an available tuning mode, only "Cable". (I don't know what they mean by "tuning mode" anyway, and the book doesn't say.) So we select "Cable", but it only finds analog channels.

Note that our TV picks up about 11 digital channels through this same antenna setup--so we believe we have good digital signals here. Is there anything we can do to get the D-VR650KU to "see" digital channels?

Answer
I could not find the model listed in the Toshiba database.  It may be too new or a derivative model.

In any event, it does, indeed, claim to receiver analog and digital signals from cable or over the air.

I suggest you go back through the owners manual for setup instructions and make sure you have it set for antenna use (not cable) and for ntsc or atsc reception of digital channels.

The reason you must set the tuner correctly is the cable channels use different frequency channels that over-the-air.  Maybe they call it antenna or broadcast or something, but if you are receiving off an antenna, the cable setting will not work for you.

Best wishes,
