Audio Systems: CAR SUBWOOFERS, dual voice coil, ohm load

Question
QUESTION: i have a 1200 watt amp and two subs on is a 500 watt sub and one is a 600 watt sub is it bad if i have both of them running together to the same amp or do i need to fade one of them? Or something like that

ANSWER: You can connect both of them to one amp; if stereo that is best.  Connect one woofer to one channel and the other to the other channel.

If the amp is mono you can parallel the woofers only if the combined impedance is not too low for the amp.  You must obtain the impedance rating of the amp and the speakers. If the speakers are 4 ohms each, then in parallel they would be 2 ohms. If the amp is not rated for 2 ohms then you should not connect them.

Let me know more if this does not answer your question well enough.  But, give me the make and model of each speaker and the amp so I can look up their specifications.

QUESTION: they are both insignia 12" subs one is like a dual voice coil 4ohms 600 watts and the other is a 12" is 500 watts thats all i really know and the amp is an insignia it was bought as a package at best buy and i replaced on of the subs cause it was broken does that help at all cause i might be able to find out more from the friend that gave it to me

Answer
Here is the deal: If you put a load on your amplifier that is too low it will burn it up.

If the woofers are both dual coil I suggest you put the coils in series, then put the two in parallel to drive from one amp.  That way you will have a 4 ohm load.  I do not know of a car audio amp that does not drive a 4 ohm load.

Conclusion: You must learn the impedance rating of the amplifier OR go with a 4 ohm minimum load on each amplifier.

Let me know if you need more.
