Audio Systems: 2 amps, dual voice coil, kicker impulse

Question
QUESTION: i wanted to hook up two amps to one 3000 watt pioneer 12in woofer. the amps are a kicker impulse 1252xi and a kicker kx 400x1 can i do that and if so how can i do it?

ANSWER: No, you cannot hook them in parallel; they will burn each other up.

YES, you can if they have bridge mode.  In bridge mode the amps can be driven out of phase; the speaker is connected between the two positive output terminals of the amp.

In your case since the amps are not identical bridging them may not be a good idea.  The impulse amp is a two channel and can be driven in bridge mode by itself.  The KX is a mono amp.

So, the impulse in bridge mode is not enough power for you?

And, you did not tell me about the speaker.  Is it dual voice coil?  What is its sensitivity?

But, bottom line: You cannot drive the two amps directly to one voice coil. If the speaker is dual voice coil you could do so, but it would not give as great a performance as the impulse alone in bridge mode and the dual coils in parallel.

Let me know if you have additional questions.

QUESTION: ok bout the woofer its a DVC he model is a TS-W3001D4 12 in so yeah. o bout the amps wat amp do u recommend on using out of the two i got? or wat do u recommend on doin with a woofer like the one i got?

Answer
This is a dual 4 ohm set up.
Here are the possibilities for hooking it up.

ONE: Coils in series will give 8 ohms.
TWO: Coils in parallel will give 2 ohms.
THREE: Drive each coils separately with stereo amp at 4 ohms each.

Option Three may be the best for you.  The impulse amp is two channel and has 4 ohm output rating.  That is the one to use; connect one channel each to the speaker and drive the amp in mono out from the head unit (stereo won't hurt anything, either; you may not hear the difference).  But, make sure you have the woofer coils wired correctly; plus to plus on both coils or you will be out of phase.

Have fun,
