Audio Systems: 3.5mm splice?, multimeter, thanks in advance

Question
I have a patch cord that is RCA-3.5mm male. I would like to cut the male end off and splice this cord into a 3.5mm female isolated chassis mount jack. I would assume upon cutting I will find 3 wires (left channel, right channel, and ground). Am I correct in this? If so how is the best way to determine which terminal on the chassis mount jack is left, right, and ground or do I just need to make a mock cable and use a multimeter to check continuity to determine this. Thanks in advance for your help.

Answer
I am assuming that the 3.5mm male is a "stereo" male.  There shold be red/wh and shield.  The shield is the common ground.  Usually, red is the right channel and the other color is left.  Cut the wire long enough to continuity check the tip/ring and sleeve of the plug to match the corresponding tabs on the panel mounted jack.
