Audio Systems: TV sound, external speakers, tv speakers

Movies played on the DVD and tape sound great with just the TV system. But the TV sound for regular viewing is awful. Can you advise something?

As an audio expert I will never advise anyone to use TV speakers for sound. I always recommend using a receiver or amplifier and external speakers. It is difficult for me to know the answer to the question about TV sound without knowing exactly what the source is. Are you using a cable or satellite box or are you using an antenna?
