Audio Systems: cd executive audio system not playing cds anymore, focus adjustment, alternate solution

Question
I own a Home Audio System with 3 CD Changer and Digital AM/FM Receiver. It has just been sitting on a box for about a year. It played the cd's but after a couple of weeks it stopped. When I put a cd on, the screen says TOC READ and it will never play it. This audio system means a lot to me because it has a sentimental meaning from the person that gave it to me. What is wrong with the system? Can it be fixed? If so, how much would it cost me?

Answer
Yes, it can be fixed.  It may not be worth it from a practical point of view, but for the sentimental reasons you state - go ahead.

It is most likely, although I cannot say for 100% sure, the laser diode becoming weak and/or being knocked out of focus.

The laser tracking assembly should be replaced and aligned. There are universal parts available that will work for most cd players.  The repair must be done by a trained audio repair tech who has the alignment disc and tools to set the focus adjustment and make sure it is working properly.  Such a repair will probably run you around $150.

An alternate solution would be to purchase an external cd player and plug it into the aux input on this system.  You can purchase cd players for $10 and up.  A changer would be much more, but still they are quite inexpensive.

Hope this helps.
