Audio Systems: single disc CD player on 2003 BMW 325i, digital to analog converter, giving up the ghost

Question
Hello,

I was driving along listening to my CD player when it started making crackling and fuzzing noises (like a radio station when you are out of frequency range) - then it stopped playing.  I removed the disc and tried other discs -and now they all say "CD error".  I just bought the car - it only has 31,000 miles on it.  What's up with this?

Answer
CD player is on the fritz looks like!

This could happen due to improper alignment of the optical pickup system (if it wasn't mounted properly at the factory, for example).

Could also be due to a failure of the digital to analog converter within the player.

Could be the transport for the cd tray has been bent or damaged.

Could also be due to the laser diode giving up the ghost.

If I had to lay odds, I think it is most likely the tracking has been jarred off course and it cannot stay on the cd grooves.  This adjustment can be made by a good tech at a car repair/install shop.  The dealer probably can't do it unless they have an entertainment systems expert on staff.

It is not an uncommon failure, sorry to say.

Sometimes you can replace the head cd player with a new one for about the same price as a repair job.

Let me know if you need more help.
