Audio Systems: Saab 9-3 Subs, inch subs, watt amp

Question
QUESTION: Hello, I have a 1999 Saab 9-3 and I have just bought two 12 inch subs that are 1200 Watts max a piece.  The brand is Pyle - PL1295BL found on pyleaudio.com they are 4 ohms a piece and i have a 2400 watt amp. This is PYLE also number PLA-2740 found on same site above.  I was wondering how to install this myself, how to do the wiring to the amp from the speakers because there are 4 spots on the subs, but only 2 on the amp for each speaker.  Also how to get the saab deck to convert to the amp.  Thank you so much for your time, i truely appreciate it!

ANSWER: The power ratings of the speakers are of no consequence.

The 1295 woofers are single voice coil and 4 ohms rating.   They are rather low sensitivity so will require goodly amount of power to drive them.  The 2740 amp is plenty.

You must decide if you are going to drive the speakers in parallel for 2 ohms and run the amp in bridge mode OR run the amp in stereo and drive each amp to one speaker.

You must run two power lines to the amp. See page 14 of the owners manual.  One wire goes all the way to battery; the other goes to the head unit for remote turn-on.  Then, of course you must have a good solid ground.

Then you will have to bring the audio connection from the head unit to the input of the amp.  Hopefully the head unit in your car has rca type outputs on the back.  Most often the head unit must be pulled out to gain access to the connectors at the back.  If it has subwoofer outputs you are in duck heaven.  If not, you will have to run stereo into the amp and set the amp for low pass sub use.  See page 16 and page 8 of your manual.

All the best.

PS: If you are an inexperienced installer you may want to go to a shop and gain advice on the many settings and wiring options.  In fact, the installation will not cost alot and maybe a wise thing to do since you have a fair investment in some nice equipment.  You wouldn't want to endanger them with faulty wiring just to save a few dollars.

Also, I am wondering how you are enclosing the woofers..  The enclosure they are mounted in will have a large effect on how they perform.

QUESTION: I have an enclosure that is vented through the middle.  i just dont know first of all, how to hoook the speakers to the amp because there are 4 little connectors on the speakers, two that are red and two that are black.  Do i just put these together to connect to the amp or what?  that and i need to figure out how my deck will convert to my amp to... but what sie wiring should i use for the speakers and what size to the battery?  And i heard that there is a little thing to hook on with the battery also that stores power so the battery doesnt go down? Is this necessary? What do you think i should do?  Thanks so much again!

ANSWER: A power cap is always a good thing to have; especially if your wires to the battery are undersize.  But, power caps are quite expensive.  Worth it?  Yes, if you listen to lots of bass frequencies in your music.  No, if you listen to light or classical type music.

The wire size should be as big as you can afford; for your amp and a run from  the battery to the back end of the car should be like gauge # 4 or at least #8.  See this:

http://www.poweracoustik.com/pa2006/tech_tip_powercable.htm

Speaker wire should be a # 12 or 14 if short run.

If there are more then two terminals on the speaker system you gave me the wrong model number.  The ones you referred to, PL1295BL, are single voice coil units. If there are four terminals on the speaker it means it is a dual voice coil speaker and they must be connected either in series or parallel.  If you put them in parallel they will give you 2 ohms impedance.  So, under these circumstances you should keep the amp in stereo and connect each speaker to one amp output. Wire the terminals on each speaker in parallel; that is, connect the two reds together and the two blacks together.

Hope this helps.

QUESTION: so if you look at the sub, it has one red and one black connector on on side, and another red and another black on the other side.  How do I wirer these to the subs? Is there a picture anywhere that will show better?  Then all i need also is a converter to my deck i think but do you know what color wires i connect them to?  other than that i think that I am set to go  Thank you so much for all your help!

Answer
Subwoofer:  Jumper the red to the red.  Jumper the black to the black.

Between amp and speaker:  Wire connecting amp to speaker is red post on amp gets connected to red post on speaker unit.  Same for black.

It is that simple.

For head unit you must know what type of output is being used.  Hopefully rca jacks; then you run coax from rca to rca.  If no audio outputs on your head unit you must use high level connections as outlined in your amp manual.  It is not a function of the color of the wire; it is getting the speaker outputs of the head deck to the inputs of your sub amp.  Your manual is quite clear on that.  If you don't know which wires to use, follow the ones coming back from the rear speaker; OR you can connect from the rear speakers directly to the hi inputs on your amp.

Good Luck.
