Audio Systems: Subwoofer connection and appropriate settings, crossover frequency, internal speaker

Question
Question: How do I attach the Subwoofer to the Receiver and what Subwoofer
settings do I use?

Speakers: A pair of KEF IQ9’s; a KEF 3500 Subwoofer

Receiver : JVC RX 5000VBK (has a Subwoofer Out jack but no internal speaker
settings.)

If I use the Subwoofer Out from the Receiver and the LFE setting on the
subwoofer I am feeding signals of 250 hz flat and the Crossover Frequency
control doesn’t work so that I’m duplicating many of the bass frequencies.

I’ve been advised that attaching the Subwoofer to the same terminals as my
loudspeakers could create an overload.

The only other Receiver outputs I have is Tape Out, and that’s a fixed volume
signal.

I am at a loss. How else can I attach the Subwoofer?

Answer
It is probably designed for a powered subwoofer. That means that you set the level of the powered sub and then control overall volume from the receiver. The crossover of a sub should be no higher that 125hz. Depending on speaker size it coul be be as low as 80hz.
