Audio Systems: Hook up stereo to TV and DVD player to TV, surprise birthday party, component stereo system

Question
QUESTION: I need to hook up a stereo and a DVD player to one TV.  The TV is fairly old so the sound isn't great, and I thought if I hooked up a stereo to it I could at least get a good sound.  I have NO knowledge since I leave such things to my husband, and since this is for a slide show for his surprise birthday party, I obviously couldn't ask him!  So I need very basic, step by step instructions.  Thank you in advance for any help!

ANSWER: The question is backwards. You would not want to hook up a stereo to a TV you would hook up a TV to a stereo. First I need to know: do you have a cable box or satellite dish or are you using an antenna?
A DVD is generally hooked up so that the yellow video output feeds the video input of the TV while the left and right stereo output of the DVD connect to a AUX, DVD or other line input of your stereo (receiver). It would help if you gave me the manufacture and model number of receiver (stereo). There may be some on-line information that I can give you.

QUESTION: This is an outside party, so there is no cable or antenna!  I'll be plugging in the TV, hooking up the DVD player to it and playing a slide show using the DVD player.  I wanted a decent sound since the TV's isn't great, and that's where the stereo came in.  The TV has yellow and white inputs(?) but no red.  I know how to hook up the DVD player to the TV, but I don't know how to put the stereo into the equation.  The stereo is a Sony Model no. HCD-EX5; Serial no. 8800105.
Thanks!

Answer
The TV is not stereo. Your DVD player is only playing one channel through the TV. If you want to listen to the DVD in stereo and have it sound good you need to plug the audio into your Sony Model no. HCD-EX5 stereo. Your TV should NOT be used for sound (keep the volume off). You have a component stereo system that is able to process external devices (that's your volume).
