Audio Systems: Stereo speaker wiring., sony speakers, engineering tests

Question
I'm currently using a good quality Sony stereo system that's about 23 years old with good quality Sony speakers that are about the same age. The speaker wire I'm using now is cheap shit and I remember reading somewhere that one of the best things that can be used for speaker wire is good quality home electrical wire that can be purchased from any hardware store. Will home electrical wiring be any good if used as speaker wire? Thanks.

I did not mean to demean your audio system.  What my point was is that expensive speaker wires do not make any noticeable improvement in sound quality unless there is something wrong with them due the aging process.

Cheap wires, if they are in good condition and properly installed (with low resistance connections and clean terminals) will produce mighty fine performance for a few feet of length.  It is not necessary to purchase big gauge expensive esoteric wiring for ANY audio system.  I can prove it with engineering tests if you want the evidence.  The speaker wiring that is sold by brand name makers is 99% marketing hype in my opinion.  And my opinion is based on engineering tests that I have conducted personally over the years.

Let me know if you have some questions.

Zip cord purchased at hardware stores is good speaker wire. If you are running them a distance greater than 100 feet you may want a larger gauge.

Do not spend alot of money on speaker wire. Especially for a system as old as yours. You are very lucky it is still working at this age!

If the system sounds okey and the current wires are not cracked or in danger of shorting out I would just leave them alone and count your blessings.
