Audio Systems: audio trouble in 88 buick reatta, buick reatta, tuner channels

Question
hi i am having trouble with my audio in my 1988 buick reatta. i have a disc changer in it but when i play cds or the radio there is a crackle in my speakers but its not the speakers because i had them replaced. the people at circuit city said that the disc changer runs through the radio tuner and that the tuner is giving out a bad output so i was wondering where the tuner is located so i could take it out and fix it and if you think the tuner is the problem. i don't have enough room in my dash to put a regular cd player. and also might it be possible to connect boombox to my speakers thanks i look forward to hearing from you

Answer
I would have to know more about the specific electronic stuff you have in the car; make, model and age and how it is hooked up to give an intelligent review.

However, if the changer is communicating to the tuner and the tuner is playing back the audio on one of the tuner channels that could very well be the weakest link.  The tuner is the radio part of the head unit in the dash.

Crackle sounds are also very common in malfunctioning speakers.  Even new ones are prone for it because the installation often results in screwing down the speaker so tight it torques the speaker basket causing it to force the voice coil to rub against the magnet pole piece and thereby making sounds of which you speak.

There are many other possible causes.  A good install/repair shop can pinpoint the problem in a very period of time.

Replacing the whole head unit may be a more simple answer than trying to fix the current one - if indeed that is the problem.

AND: I wouldn't be surprised if you could find an in-dash 5 cd changer for your car. Go to www.crutchfield.com and see if they have a recommendation.  Start your search at:
