Audio Systems: 2001 Pontiac Sunfire cd installation, pontiac sunfire, wiring harnesses

Question
Hello,
I just bought a Dual cd player for my car and when we tried to install it the wires on the car are different colors than on the cd player. Can you tell me which colors are the hot wire, the ground wire, and which ones go to the front and rear speakers.
thank you!

Answer
You have two choices:

ONE:  Trace out the wires in the car and make sure they are matched up to the correct wiring of the new head unit.  If you are experienced and have a vom you can do it with some testing and matching of wires.  (Assuming you have the wiring chart for the new Dual unit.

TWO:  Purchase the wiring harness to match your car and the set.  Take a look at www.installer.com or www.crutchfield.com for wiring harnesses.  If you were to have purchased the new head unit from Crutchfield they would have sent you the wiring harness and installation instructions with the unit.

The above is an old color scheme for GM cars, but I think your Sunfire still follows this wiring convention.  At least you can check it and see.  Take the wires you think are a particular speaker and connect a D cell or 9v battery across the wires and see if you get a click in the speaker when touching the battery terminals to the wires, etc.

Hope this will help.

PS: If the installdr.com pages aren't correct, then try this one which may be the right one.  I cannot find the exact one for a 2001.
