Audio Systems: Output stuck on headphones only, question response, speaker output

Question
QUESTION: I can not change the output on my amp (STR-DE598 surround amplifier).  Under normal circumstances, the amp automatically switches to HP output when the HP's are plugged in.  However, now it's acting as though my headphones are plugged in and won't allow me to switch to any other setting regardless if headphone are plugged in or not.  Since I'm not too familiar with audio electronics, I don't know where to look for a solution. Any ideas?

ANSWER: The headphone jack should switch the speakers off when the jack is inserted into the headphone receptacle.

But, you should always get audio. If you are not getting audio  at the HP output you will not be getting audio at the speakers either.

Problem is likely in the main power supply that feeds the audio board.  Please check to see if any lights are coming on at all.  If no lights at all, check your power outlet.  If standby light is on the receiver is in trouble and will need servicing.  Cost of repair will be around $100.

---------- FOLLOW-UP ----------

QUESTION: Thanks for your answer.  I do, however, have a follow up question/response: I can still get audio from my headphones when plugged in to the HP jack, but that's the only output I can get.  The problem is that when I remove the HP from the jack, my amp won't switch back to any other type of ouput.  No matter what I do (HP plugged in or not), my amp "thinks" the headphones are plugged in.  Even the display still reads "HP".  It's like my amp is permanently stuck in HP output mode.  Whereas, in the past, the moment I removed the headphones, my amp would revert back to normal speaker output.

Any ideas you can provide would be very useful.  Thanks,

Charles

Answer
Could be either of the following:

ONE:  Defective HP jack.  When the plug is removed, the contacts do not make back to the speaker setting.  Repair or replace the headphone jack would be necessary.

TWO:  Controller IC that manages switching of the audio is defective. Requires service by expert tech.  Not a home remedy situation.

ALTERNATIVE SUGGESTION:  Use the headphone output to drive external speaker system. You can purchase them at a pc store for around $25 and up with built-in amps and good sound.  It may require an adapter to go between the HP output jack and the plug of the speakers.
