Audio Systems: DVD systems in Fords, fuse panels, ford excursion

Question
I have a 2004 Ford Excursion that I just recently purchased.  However the stock DVD system will not turn on, as it should when you put a DVD in (no picture no lights etc).  The dealer mentioned it possibly could be a fuse.  (The owners manual did not show an seperate fuse for the DVD only so I was not sure which fuse it was.  Aside from taking it to a Ford Dealer, how could I go about trouble shooting this DVD system?  Thanks in advance.  - Sean

Answer
Could be a fuse.  There are two fuse panels in the Excursion. One under the hood in the engine compartment near the battery and engine area. The other is inside under the dash between the steering column and drivers door area.  You should check all fuses and replace any that are suspect.  There may be other items in the car that are not working; overhead light or some other thing on the same circuit. It may be labeled as accessory fuse or something like that.

If you know how to get to the power lines going to the dvd player and you have a vom (volt-ohm-meter) you should check to see if the two 12v lines have the 12v on them.  If not, you must find out where it got lost!  There may even be a fuse port near the dvd player itself. If it was installed as an aftermarket item they often have an in-line fuse right in the 12v wire feeding power to the box.

Do not take it toa Ford Dealer unless they have an entertainment specialist in the shop, or if it is still under their warranty.  Otherwise take it to an install/repair shop that specializes in auto installations.

Good Luck,
