Audio Systems: New Head unit in 2002 Stratus, infinity system, power amp

Question
Hi, i have a 2002 Stratus R/T with the Infinity system.  My uncle purchased me a panasonic headunit with a flip up 7" LCD,dvd,cd,ipod, all the good stuff.  When installed, the sound would not work.  Everything appeared wired correctly, as we used harnesses(already in the wiring as well as from the head unit) and our theory is that the stock amp that comes with my system is not on.  If this is plausible, can u tell me how i could check this problem and if that is it how can i fix it?
Thank u so much
Mike.

Answer
There are many possibilities, however, the first thing that came was the power amp.

There are two 12v lines to the amp. One is constant power the other is for turning it on.  The latter comes from the head unit and when it turns on, the turn ON line to the power amp activates it.

You need a VOM to check the voltages at the power amp (follow the wires from the head unit outs to the power amp inputs to find it - could even be more than one amp.  Best voltmeter/vom for working on autos is from Walmart electrical section for $9.83.  IT will do the job of checking for voltages and looking for shorts on the speaker lines, etc.

If the voltage lines to the amp are working properly I would temporarily disconnect all speaker lines at the back of the power amp and connect a known good speaker by just a short wire pair for testing.  Then test each channel one by one until you know for sure the amp is working properly.

Good Luck,
