Audio Systems: Sony GNX-60 stereo turns off by it self, home theater speakers, home theater cables

Question
Hi,

I have a Sony GNX-60 stereo and both the original speakers blew up. Then I used 2 home theater speakers on it which worked fine with normal small speaker cables. But once I used a v long (10M) thick home theater cables on the same speakers, after sometime the stereo turned off by it self. Now when I turn it on (even with no speakers connected) it turns off by it self in about 15seconds. Can this be fixed easily? If so please tell me how to do it. Cheers

Answer
Speaker wires would not make any difference.

UNLESS:  You accidentally shorted one of the wires.  The fact that the unit is shutting down even though the speakers are disconnected is an indication the one or more of the output transistors has given  up the ghost!

Of course the failure could be coincidental and still not related to the wire issue above.

The repair involves determining which of the 4 or more output transistors (or modules; sometimes Sony puts them in an encapsulated package) are defective and replacing them. It is not easy. It requires an advanced electronic technician who can do the testing and remove the defective units (or module)regrease (on the heat sinks) and resolder the replacement parts.

Hope this helps.

Cheers
