Audio Systems: 2001 grand marquis single/dub din dvd, audio playback systems, mercury grand marquis

Question
I have a 2001 Mercury Grand Marquis and would like to install a cd/dvd player with satellite capability.  I'm military, so I don't have a huge amount of money to shell out, but I understand quality has a price.  That being said, I was wondering the following:
a) lower price / better quality: single or double din
b) is it possible to install a single din, fold out screen in my car (with the dash coming out so far over the radio)?  Basically, would the screen hit upon extension and not serve its funcion?
c) if you haven't already, please tell me what are some of your personal recommendations, regarding the receivers, of course? (can't leave any room for wise cracks)

Answer
I am not much on equipment recommendations because there are so many subjective factors that are unique to the user.

I do, however, like to make recommendations that are easy to fit and install in cars.  The best site I have found for this is www.crutchfield.com and highly recommend them to you. You don't have to purchase from them, but if you do they provide you with wiring harness kits and installation instructions for the car you working with.  Their database on all model cars and products is the best around.

Crutchfield also has a few technical pages that will help with installation techniques and suggestions.  Yamaha likewise has some good installation guides.

Once you have decided on what kind of system you want to install you can shop the product and buy from the best source.

For product ideas you can go from the portable car dvd player that hangs over the back of the drivers seat to overhead drop down displays and two program audio playback systems.  The range of money you can spend and componentry is large; a few hundred to a few thousand dollars.  I know this is not a very precise reply to your question but maybe it will put you on the pathway to help you determine the system you want.

A system in the middle is the Jensen  VM 9312 which may fit your car.  Here is Crutchfield's rendition of it for the Merc.

Hope you end up with an awesome system.
