Audio Systems: Hifonics 1600 watt amp, hifonics brutus, amp fuse

Question
I am going to buy a Hifonics Brutus BXi 1606D Amplifier and I was going to ask what size or kind of In-Line fuse should I use with this amp? Or should I use a breaker and what size? I have 4 gauge power wiring. And I will be running the Treo SSX (2500 watts RMS)wired in 1 Ohm.
Thanks

Answer
This is a class D amplifier configuration; this class of amplification is very efficient.  They can reach almost 96% efficiency.  Since this is a 1600 watt amp you will need to be able to pass enough current to support full output.

Power is equal to current times voltage.

So:  Current = Power/voltage = 1600W/12v = 133 amp.

Therefor, you will need a really big fuse. In my opinion you should start with something lower and see if that supports your needs because I really doubt the amp will be driven to full output on any kind of regularity.  Why don't you try an 80 amp fuse first and if it blows too frequently, then up it.

Also, have you considered adding a power capacitor to the amp?  This will take some load off the battery and smooth out the load on the car electrical system.  A power capacitor mounts next to the amp power terminals and is a 1 or 2 Farad capacitor.

Good Luck
