Audio Systems: Old cassette player making noise, common music, small fortune

Question
Hi there, I'm in the process of transferring music from old tapes to my computer.  I own an old player and each time I press any of the player's buttons (play, ff/cue, rew/rev) I hear some kind of grounding sound.  Is there something I can do to resolve this issue?

Answer
The simple answer is to try and find someone else with a cassette player and do your transfers. Unless you personally know a technician in his 50's or 60's your probably not going to find anyone who is willing to look at it. Even if you do, unless there a friend they'll probably charge you a small fortune to (try) and repair it.

Another other possibility is to find a dubbing service that will charge you per tape. The best solution is if it's fairly common music to go on Amazon.com and buy used DVD's (if available) it's the least amount of trouble.

Of all of the older technology I would say cassette & 8 track are the most antiquated. Between the mechanism and the electronics (as a technician repairing them) the problems that they had were extensive and in many cases were time consuming to track down.

It sounds like the noise is not present until you press one of the buttons. What is the manufacturer and model of the player? I need to know if the buttons are electonic or electo mechanical.

If you stay on the route to trying to make your machine work all I can say from a professional point of view is GOOD LUCK
