Audio Systems: 2002 Honda Odyssey, honda odyssey, haynes manuals

Question
Hi,
I bought a used Honda Odyssey with a factory radio and cd player in it. It was fine until the battery went dead and I had to change it out. Now I need a security code to reset the stereo  and cd player so it will work. The code recorded by hand in the owner's manual will not work and the dealership wants to charge me 90.00 to take the radio out and look for the correct code on the back of the stereo. I can't afford that and don't know how to do it on my own. Is there another way to obtain this code. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Answer
Hi Kristi,
These security codes can be really annoying. My guess is that the radio currently installed in your vehicle is different from the one originally installed, and that is why the code in the manual is not working.  Your best do-it-yourself option would be to purchase or borrow or otherwise locate the service manual (different from the owner's manual) and follow the instructions inside to remove the radio.  It can be difficult to find service manuals for cars older than a few years, but several companies have produced third-party manuals that can be had for under $20, including Haynes Manuals, Inc. Alternatively, you could check on eBay for a service manual. In the end, it may be less trouble to just pay the dealer to reset the radio for you (just make sure you get the correct code this time!)

Sorry I'm not more helpful on this... as my profile states, I am not really qualified to handle car-specific questions.
