Audio Systems: Chrysler Sebring Convertible Radio Connections, speaker level signal, chrysler sebring convertible

Question
I am trying to help a friend out with a Chrysler Sebring (1996) convertible, who has a radio problem. This car has one of the Infiniti premium systems, with the external amplifier, 6 disc CD changer.  The radio in it is a P4704302.  Basically, it looks like the tape player mechanism burned up and made the whole thing not work.  What I was going to do was to replace the tape unit from a known working radio into this radio, mainly because there is a white, two pin connector on the back of this radio, bottom right corner, next to the cd changer control, that I cannot find on any used radios I have found.  I bought one that has all the rest of the connectors on it that I will take the tape drive out of if necessary, but if that two pin connector doesn't really need to be used, I'll just pop in the whole new radio, instead of piecing things together.  My first question is do you know what that two pin connector on this radio is for?
The second question is this: my buddy took a radio from a caravan and stuck it in there, and it works (no cd control, just radio for the time being).  I'm confused, b/c I thought that he'd blow out his speakers sending an amplified signal into the Infiniti amp... Would you be able to provide some insight as to how these systems work? For example, are the head units amplified? Do I even need the amp to get the new radio to work? We're actually looking to replace the amp at this point, as the front speakers do not work (apparently the amp got flooded b/c he left the top down).

Thanks for your help!

Answer
The 2 wire plug is for the steering wheel controls.
Sounds like time to replace the whole works with after market gear. If you do keep the OEM stuff, swapping infinity and non-infinity systems is fine. The OEM amp takes speaker level signal and boosts it. Yeah, not an ideal system, I know.
if you bypass the OEM amp, you'll have to make a jumper harness. Some car audio shops do this regularly and can give you an estimate to do it all. Another option is to find an exact replacement amp at an auto salvage yard, or e-bay.
