Audio Systems: stereo reciever, sony receivers, 4 ohm speakers

Question
I just purchased 4 Boston Acc. VR2 stereo speakers.  Also I purchased a new cd changer at the same time (about 2 weeks ago).  I have purchased 6 receivers to try to get the sound I am looking for.  We listen to music only, no TV.  The problem I am having is that I can not get good sound with all 4 speakers at higher levels.  We have tried Onkyo, yamaha, Denon and sony receivers.  The sound was best with the Denon stereo receiver however it kept shutting down at louder levels.  We have spent almost 3,000.00 on this system and I don't know what way to go to just get a good stereo system that sounds great and has even sound with all 4 speakers.  I was using an old sony component system with a mix of 6 different speakers that was 15 years old and that sounded better.  Please help me put this system together.  The room I have is about 24x40 and if I just use two speakers hooked up to the front A&B it sounds better, but it just is not loud enough.

Answer
Hi Jamie,

Given my experience in general but not with any of these particular components, I think the answer is one that many people miss: it's not the receivers, unless they're all under-powered or mis-matched (what are the VR2 speakers rated at? 8 ohms? 4 ohms?) or perhaps the VR2's just don't sound that good and you can go through all amps you want, you just don't care for the sound of the VR2's - maybe you can try listening to some other speakers with the same receivers/amps and see if you notice a difference.  As said, the only other thing that comes to mind is that perhaps you're driving 4 ohm speakers with 8 ohm connections, which will work OK until you try to really drive them, or that the receivers/amps, all of them, are just underpowered to drive all four of those speakers, which I'm sure require a pretty heavy-duty amp, and it would be better to buy a separate amp and receiver, not an integrated unit.  That's the best I can do with limited info and not knowing what the setup is like.  Good luck!  Cheers, Wink
