Audio Systems: Car Audio, kicker subs, nissan 300zx

Question
Hey Mark,
Like most of the people who ask you questions, i too am pretty ignorant when it comes to car audio. I just bought a Nissan 300ZX and my next step is to upgrade it from the very stock sound system that it came with. That's where my problem comes in. I don't want to take any chances when it comes to spending money since it likes to come to me so slowly but i know that i want something around the lines of two 10" kicker subs (around 1200 max each) and some infinity speakers up front and back. Now i picked these because of all the good things i've heard of them, and i like the way kickers sound. I would really appreciate it if you could help me get started with what i need in terms of an amp, crossover, ect. thanks a lot. You can contact me via email please because i check it almost everyday.

Answer
one of the first things you may want to check is if your Nissan has a bose factory system.  I believe the 300zx had this as an option.  if so your job is going to be much more difficult.  to check you'll probably see bose written on the speaker grills or cd player.
hopefully you don't.
so if you want to upgrade and as you said, money comes slow (tell me about it!)  you can do your setup piece by piece.  this is usually the best way for most people.
a good place to start, again assuming you don't have the blose system, is to change out the cd player.  If I were you, I'd go to www.crutchfield.com for your cd player, they will give you a free wiring harness specific to your vehicle and a free dash kit for your vehicle, etc.  You can find the same cd players cheaper but getting it through crutchfield has many advantages so I HIGHLY recommend that.
Next you can get a set of component speakers for the front doors.  if you have extra money and the factory rear speakers REALLY suck you can change them out too but you want to concentrate the majority of your speaker cash on the front speakers.
I LOVE Infinity speakers myself but I have noticed that their tweeters are way too loud and harsh for my taste.  If you get them and find the same problem I've designed a very simple 8 dollar fix using a few resistors available online.  I'll be happy to help you with that as well.
Infinity usually uses hard dome tweeters, materials like ceramic and metal which in an open, home like environment sound amazing but tend to sound ringy and harsh in the car environment.  I prefer silk dome tweeters for car stereo.

before I ramble more and more, why don't we set some realistic goals here,  #1 unfortunately being budget and if its going to be in spurts let me know how so I can plan it for you.  but like I said, first, cd player, then door speakers or sub and amp, then door speakers etc. so head to crutchfield, plug in your year make and model and pick out a cd player you can afford now.  if you want help in that first part let me know.
if space is also a consideration let me know if you need it to be as small as possible etc.
I'll be happy to design the system top to bottom if you want and help you all along the way, if you want to email me directly just send me a private message at this site with your email address.
hope to hear from you.
