Audio Systems: amp wiring, watts rms, rca cables

Question
QUESTION: hi i have 2 kenwood amp both the same and 2 12" subs bth the same i want to wire 1 sub to 1 amp and have both pairs work in my car im not sure how to wir this up to get the most power my amps do have preamp outputs but i dont know weather to use them or just run the rca cables both from my head unit so wat do you think would work best? thanks for helping!
ANSWER: you should be able to run the subwoofer output RCAs from the cd player to the first amp's inputs, then take a 2nd short set of RCAs and go from the first amp's preamp outputs over to the 2nd amp's inputs.
make sure you've got all the settings the same like the gain knobs set the same, the crossover knobs the same etc.

Depending on the ohms of the subs and the specs of your amp, doing this may not be the best thing. if you want me to tell you if doing this is a good idea or not, please provide me with the EXACT model numbers from the amps and subs please.

thanks!

QUESTION: ok i have 2 (kenwood-KAC-7202-2-CH-920_watts) amps and 2
(kenwood-KFC-W3010-1000-watts) subs i talked to a guy from tweeter and he told me some stuff but i wanted a other opinon to all this if you could get back to me asap that would be cool thank you again and like if you know of any diagrams i can look up yo look at that would be cool well thanks again
ANSWER: well, these subs are only rated for 200 watts RMS each and your amps (if you run each amp to each sub like you are talking) is rated to put out 460 watts to each sub, so its more than twice the power they are rated for.
as long as it's clean power and not distorting you might be ok, but if you hear any distortion they're likely to blow a few seconds later.

QUESTION: yea but it should be ok they wouldent say you could do that in the book if you cant so thank for everthing and how comes there 1000watt max ?>

Answer
max power and RMS power are very different. RMS power (although it technically means something else) is commonly referred to the amount of power that the speaker will take continuously and not be damaged.  Max power traditionally means the maximum burst so to speak that the speaker can withstand.  which is highly subjective.  a manufacturer could say their speaker could take bursts of 1000 watt music WHILE the 200 watt average is being sustained. OR they could say it took 1000 watts for 1 millisecond right before it burst into flames.
both of those scenarios have the same numbers and same ratings but mean completely different things obviously.  so its better to stick to the RMS ratings since they are less likely to be misleading.
there was actually a test that was performed on these speakers that I read with 200 watts RMS applied and with 1000 watts applied,  with 1000 watts they barely made any more sound at all (less than 1 db more) and sounded horrible compared to what they sounded like with 200 watts.  so putting your 460 on it will probably have similar results.
which leads me back to what I said before, if you hear distortion, turn it down.
good luck!
