Audio Systems: Speaker Distortion, teac ag, amplifier power

Question
I have a TEAC AG-V8520 Tuner/amplifier driving a pair of 30 year old AR 3Ax speakers. I am having base distortion in one of the speakers, at all levels of volume. I noticed this especially after having the amplifier power supply recently repaired. The power standby relay had failed. I suspect the speaker is the problem but have no idea how to get inside the box or find anyone who can help me.

Answer
Has the AR3 ever been repaired?  It is a very old unit and surprising if it has not been repaired by this time.

Depending on where you live, most bigger cities have a speaker repair shop of one kind or another.  If the voice coil has come loosened it can be easily reanchored and glued back down.  If the cone has come loose from the basket, that can be repaired also.

Can you remove the grille from the front panel? If so, you can listen up close at a low volume and identify the scraping noise, or rattling or other distortion sound from within the speaker itself. Sometimes just gently pushing on the cone you can hear something rubbing or scraping when there is no signal from the amp.

The AR3 is a grand old speaker and worth the repair efforts.

If you do a google for "ar speaker repair" you will get a few places that will repair them.

Let me know if you need more.

PS: If you temporarily swap the speakers you will know if it is the speaker or the amp that is causing the distortion.
