Audio Systems: home subwoofer doesnt work, slo blo, blown fuse

Question
Hi Wink,

I have an infinity BU-80 subwoofer that, as of yesterday will not produce any sound.  I checked out the speaker itself and found it is not blown so it must be in the electronics.  I don't think it's getting any power because the power light is not on but also heard that with these models the power/ status light is not always accurate.  Could it be a blown fuse?  I have found the fuse as being "250V, .50A and type T SLO BLO". Radio Shack only has 250V, .50A and type GMA.  Are these interchangeable?  I checked everything else... the capacitors are not swelling and everything seems to be connected to the board.  Thanks for the help!

Answer
Hi Phil,

Sorry, but specific questions about particular models of audio systems for them is impossible for any "expert" to answer, as I don't own that audio equipment.  Research on the Web using search engines or call the manufacturer for assistance.  My guess is that you're right and it is a fuse, if you're lucky, or a blown, fried or melted circuit.  Just because the light is on means there's power, but there can definitely be a fuse blown / tripped that needs to be replaced / reset.

If you replace a fuse with a "GMA" instead of a "SLO BLO" (which means "slow blow", e.g. it takes longer to burn out, over a period of too high a power rate rather than as good as it's exceeded.)  You may find the GMA replacements blowing out often because they burn as soon as a certain amount of power (250V, 0.5 amps) are exceeded.

If that doesn't work, then some of the circuitry is probably fried, which means you need to have it serviced or replaced.  Good luck!  Cheers, Wink
