Audio Systems: Powering down, powered subs, max power

Question
My JL 500/1 amp which is running 2x10w3v2's was working fine, but then shut down after what I think was overheating. So now whenever I run it, it turns on and off when I turn the subs up. It runs fine at low volume, but I'd like to be able to get what I paid for. Thanks for listening.

Answer
Hi Matt,

Unfortunately, you are getting what you paid for, which is too bad if the manufacturer promised more.  If you have subs, they take a LOT of power to drive, and it's likely that your amp is just way too underpowered to handle how much the subs need.  You should find out what the min/pgm/max. power requirements are needed for the subs, and work backwards from there to find a new amp that will be able to drive them.

The shutting down is from overheating, to save circuits from burning out or even melting, and the subs going on/off are as they try to pull power and the amp can't handle the load requirements.  If you bought it new recently, or if it's still under warranty or otherwise return it, send it back and buy one that you're sure has the output to be able to drive your subs properly.  It'll cost more, of course, but that's the only way you can get the power to run subs.

Another option is to return or sell your subs and get ones that have their own power supply, which I'm assuming these subs don't - that will easily allow your JL or any amp to run, and subs with separate power supplies (they usually require you to mount an extra battery in the trunk or such) - anyway, powered subs sound much better anyway.  Good luck!  Cheers, Wink
