-----Question-----
hi, I am buying a 2004 dodge stratus sxt 2 door coupe and was wondering how much the factory speakers can hold up if i put a full aftermarket system in without replacing the speakers....would they blow easily? (im looking at putting in Polk db212-2 subs)
-----Answer-----
usually they fair quite well IF you use a highpass filter on them. see in the factory setup there are no subs so the door speakers are trying to reproduce trebble, midrange, and bass.  but once you add the subs the door speakers dont need to produce bass since the subs now do that.  so if you filter the bass out of the door speakers they only have to make midrange and trebble which require less power and are less work for the small door speakers to do.
you can actually drive most factory speakers to very loud levels if you cross them over right.  this is why I usually use an amplifier for the door speakers since they have the crossover built in and can make the door speakers louder to compete with the new subs.
If you want a recomendation of a good bang for the buck 4 channel amp to run your door speakers I'd take this one:

if you run the door speakers with an amp set the crossover to about 90hz (highpass, not lowpass)

good luck!

SURE!  easy, take a look at this link here:

this is almost the same amp as the one I'm recomending, it has the same layout, etc.  see where it has switches that say X-over, you'd set those to HPF (highpass filter) and then there's the knobs to the left of the switches that say HPF on them,  I think they go from like 40-150 or something so you just guestimate and set them at where 90 is (about the middle) and that's about it!
so if you want to do this whole setup, you'll pretty much need a new cd player so you can get the RCA outputs.  then you'll run the front and rear RCA's do this amp (on the left if the picture you see where all 4 of those plug in) and then your subwoofer amp can plug into this amp's line out RCAs (on the right side of the pic you'll see these) or if your cd player has a 3rd set of RCAs just for sub then run those to your sub amp.  so you'll run 2 amps, one for the 4 door speakers and 1 for the subs.  I really want to get my hands on a set of those polk db subs, they look pretty good for the money.
