Audio Systems: stereo fuse, stereo fuse, electrolytic capacitors

Question
I have a Kenwood stereo system and it keeps blowing the fuse. The fuse is a 5 amp 125 v.  Do you have any idea of what could be wrong with it or should the system be trashed?  Thank you

Answer
When a device blows the second fuse you can assume it is not the fuse that went bad, but something inside the set.  If the set is over 2 or 3 years of age you may find it, in the long run, to be replacing it the wisest solution.

Most common fuse blower in stereo boxes is a defective transformer or shorted electrolytic capacitors.  The repair costs are very high for a transformer; not to high for the caps.  But, I would think repairs will be over $100 and probably closer to $200.

In any event, unplug the power cord for 30 minutes.  Make sure the set is OFF, then plug it back in and try it again. If it fails, then you will need the repairs.
