Audio Systems: Battery running down, factory radio, hot wire

Question
My son is running the factory radio in a 2003 YUkon with a 820 Gothic Poweraccustic amp and one 15" solobaric L7 speaker. The battery is running down and it is new. The alternator seems ok and is factory alternator. He was wired in on the hot wire from the alt to the battery. I think it was robbing the juice from this line. Do you have any recomendations?

Answer
there's a wire on the amp labeled "remote"  this wire triggers the amp to turn on and off.  if it's not wired properly the amp will just stay on all the time and drain the battery.  what I would do is look at the amp, these amps have a very bright blue light on the top.  if the car is off and the sound system is off, key is out etc.  the blue light should be off as well,  if its always on then that would defiantly drain the battery.
if it's working properly, then the blue light should only turn on when the sound system is on.  when you shut it off and take the key out etc, the light should fade out and off (may take a min, but needs to go off eventually)

If the light is working right but the battery is still draining then I'd try just removing the fuses from the amp for a few days and see if the battery still goes dead.  Of course the amp wont work while its fuses are out, but this will at least narrow down where the problem is,  it's entirely possible something else is draining the battery, not the amp, and this will tell you that.

good luck and let me know how it goes.
