Audio Systems: Amp and 12, amp connector, bench test

Question
Alright...that helps to know about the vom and that can help with both the amp and the speaker?? The amp and speaker both are made from the company Visonik. Now is there anyway that I could take that amp and/or speaker apart and fix whatever problems I'm having with them? I've taken the top cover off the amp and it doesn't appear to be burn or anything. And the speaker I'm not sure how to go about taking apart and fixing it, because its not blown it just wont play sound/bass!

I have an amp for my car and when I hook everything up...the light for the amp comes on to let me know it is working but there is a little red and green light to let me know if everything is hooked up correctly and their not working for me...I also cant get the amp to work even though it has power and is on!? Any suggestions? I also have a 12" speaker and I don't think it is blown but when I hook it up nothing happens! I thought it should at least sound blown or something! HELP PLEASE!!!

Can't give you anything specific wihtout knowing the make and models.

But, here are the things I would check:

ONE:  Make sure both 12v lines are working properly to the amp.  One wire comes from the battery through a fuse and is always on.  The other wire is the switching line and turns on the amp and that wire comes from the ignition and/or the head unit.  So, you must make sure the amp is coming on.  Best way to check for proper voltages at the amp connector block is to rush down to Walmart and pickup their $9.83 vom (if you don't already have one) and use it to check for the right voltages.  Put the red lead on the 12v line connections at the amp and the black lead of the vom to metal ground of the car somewhere.

TWO:  If the amp does not come on (all lights working) then it may be defective.  You may have to pull it from the car and bench test it (this means connect it up outside the car to the battery (Or a extra batter thay may be kicking around in the garage) and then to a separate loudspeaker using a portable player as a signal input.  Once you have checked the amp outside the car and it is working, then you know it was not hooked up properly when in the car.

THREE:  You can check the loudspeaker with the new vom you just go at Walmart.  Just measure the dc resistance and if you get 4 to 6 ohms it should be alright.  If it is defective the voice coil is likely open and you will show open circuit on the ohmmeter.

Then, come back to me if you have further questions or need help with the troubleshootting procedure outlined above..

Answer
Speaker: Disconnect it from the wires coming from the amp. Connect the VOM black and red  leads to the + and - terminals of the speaker and set the vom for resistance.  If the resistance of the speaker is low, around 4 to 8 ohm range, it is probably good. If the speaker is defective it will read a very high resistance on your ohmmeter.  Another good test is hooking a D 1.5v battery across the terminals of the loudspeaker. If you hear a bloop coming from the speaker when the battery is connected and again when it is disconnected it means the voice coil is good.

AMP:  Bench test it.  Pull it out of the car, with long wire leads, hook it up to the vehicle battery.  Connect a known good speaker to the output terminals.  Feed an audio signal into the amp with a portable radio, cd or cassette player.  This will verify if the unit is working properly. If it is working okey outside the vehicle but not when you hook it up in the car, then you have a wiring problem.  If the amp is defective outside the car with external battery power, then we must find out the problem.  But make sure you have both 12v lines hooked up.

AND:  If the amp is not working I urge you to carry it into a car/installer shop where they can look at it.  Unless you are an advanced tech it will not be easy to troubleshoot and repair.

Maybe this will get you rolling.  Let me know if you get hung up.
