Audio Systems: Bedroom Accoustics, amp off, soundproof foam

Question
Hi, thanks for volunteering! I'm the mom of a budding young rock star- my son Jimmy. He's 15. He just got his new giant Ibanez amp last night for Christmas. He plays the electric guitar and is into Power Metal, learning to shred, Death metal and all things loud!

This is cool with me, but I'm a single mom on a budget and we're noticing the amp sounds different in his room than it did in the store. I'm assuming this is a matter or acoustics. Can you please suggest some budget friendly ideas we can do in his bedroom so he can jam? The room is about 15ft by 12ft. There's a window on one wall, a door on one wall, and a closet on one wall. He has stuff hanging all over the walls. We noticed the sound is better when he put on the casters to get the amp off the carpet. And he likes playing in the bathroom- which needs to stop. Any suggestions on what we can do to the room would be appreciated!!
Thanks,
Lisa

Answer
I would have to guess - not knowing anything about the native acoustic characteristics of your space.  But here goes.

Most home type construction uses plaster painted walls and hard floors (with carpet over some or all of them).  Plaster and glass are highly reflective.

So, I am guessing the sound will be more balanced if the reflections were subdued.  That will require more absorptive materials on the walls.  Hanging a large rug on one or two of the walls as an experiment can give you an idea if this will bring the high frequencies in balance with mid and bass stuff.  If the window is large compared with the wall you may have to cover something there, also.

If the floors are bare, rugs will help.

Also, if you go to a big music or recording shop they have special foam called eggcrate design that is used for treatment;; ;ugly in appearance, but very effective, and not too expensive.

Maybe this will help.

The above is a picture of it.  There are several sources and brands to choose from.
