Audio Systems: My CD Player Turns off, fuse block, ford tempo

Question
I just bought a 93 ford tempo from a friend. everything was working great until a night ago. i went to turn on my headlights and the cd player just shut off and didn't come back on. I've had the car for about a month now. this problem just started happening. what could be the problem?

Answer
Too many possibilities to venture any kind of an accurate guess. It will require you to do some investigations.

The problem could be a wiring or power problem within the car or it could be due to a failure of the cd player.

If you know how to use a VOM you can check to see if there is 12v at the power intput to the player.

If you are non technical, check the fuses first.  The ford has a fuse block under the hood in a big black plastic box that has a removable cover. With a flashlight you can check the location of the fuses and replace any that look like they have failed.  An overload when the lights went on could have caused a fuse failure.

If the fuses are good and the cd player is still not coming on you may have to pull it out and have it bench tested.  If it works outside the car then you still have problems inside the car. If it does not work on the bench it may need servicing - or replacing.

If the unit is the original with the car it is very old and no wonder that it has failed. You should replace it.

If you need further guidance, be sure and give me more information:  Exact model of your car, make and model and age of the cd player.
