Audio Systems: replacement CD/Radio for Ford Explorer, polk audio speakers, amp unit

Question
Hey
I'm looking for the best "bang for the buck" replacement radio/CD/amp unit for my 98 ford explorer. I'm looking for a aux-in for my iPod, good fidelity quality, an EQ, and something that will look good (quality, not flashy) in the dashboard.
any ideas?
while we're at it, could I impose on you for advice on replacement speakers that will drop-in-fit?

thanks a TON!

Hubbert

Answer
Hubbert,

I presume you are replacing a factory CD headunit with a built-in amp.

An all in one headunit with an iPod port can be had for very reasonable costs. Even with the Ipod, I would get one that also plays writeable CD's so that you can have 100's of your own MP3 tunes on a cd.

To be sure, my best advice here is to spend as much as you can afford on the speakers since they will provide the most noticable quality to the sound. I am sure some 'baseline' Polk Audio speakers will drop right in, last years, and sound incredile for about $70-90 a set. *You do not need to get the 400.00 component models to benefit greatly from thier renowned name.

Now that the generalities are over:

As to what exacly fits, I would go to www.crutchfield.com plug in your vehicle data, and see what you can afford.
If the online experience is a bit too deep, they have a toll free number in case you need more advice. In either case, I would advise you to at least speak to one of their reps (online or on the toll free line) about all of the proper wire adaptors (so you will not need to cut any wires). They provide these adaptors FREE for any paying customer along with great support before and after the sale. The rep will be sure you get everything you need the first time.

I am sure this will get you on your way to some long lasting tunage for that Explorer. :)

Sincerely,
Jerry Mael
