Audio Systems: Dual Voice Coil subwoofers, dual voice coil, voice coils

Question
Thanks for responding Garry!

If one of the voice coils is damaged
should the connections of that associated voice coil be open circuit or would the impedance value alter
in comparison to the other (healthy voice coil)?

Thanks again, I will check the output of the amp
it is 2Ohm stable is 4 channel with 2 channel bridged mode(No bridged mono)

Regards,

Alex

-----Question-----
Hello, Mr. McLemore.

I have two 4 ohm DVC subwoofer(4ohm for each voice coil).
I am connecting one sub at a time to a stereo amplifier with a mono low level input with output gains set equal for each channel (one voice coil in left and one in right channel)!

A voice coil in each sub switches off the amp and keeps blowing the brading lead between the coil and the connection.

Each voice coil still measures 4 Ohms on a multi-meter.

Any ideas what is happening?

Thanks,

Regards,

Alex Moore

sounds like your amp might be putting out a dc current, blowing the lead. power the amp up with no speakers hooked up to it and check output terminals with a volt meter. if there's dc present, amp is bad. note, even though coils read 4 ohms through meter, they're actually around 3 ohms if you add the ac component. is your amp designed to handle loads that low? you might need to series hook up speakers, meaning + of one going to + on amp, - goes to + of second speaker, then - of that one goes to - on amp. this works best if you can set the amp to 'bridged' and hook speakers to + on one channel, and  - speakers goes to + of other channel.  good luck..

if one of the voice coils is damaged, you need to just go ahead and replace the speaker. through mwa speaker works, you probably could get parts to rebuild speaker, but you need different types of glue, voice coil shims, etc., but for a first timer at rebuilding drivers, you would be better off replacing it. it took me a few tries before i got speaker rebuilding down.
