should I be able to get power to the new radio by just connecting the Battery and the ignition wire? Or do I need to complete the entire wiring process?

there are 3 wires nessesary to have the unit power up.  there's the ground wire (usually black) there's a constant 12volts to the battery wire (usually yellow) and a 12 volt switched line that is commonly refered to as iginition since it only turns on with the key (typicaly red)  You do not have to connect anything else for the unit to turn on.
