Audio Systems: Removing 2000 Ford Mustang Stereo, noise rejection, ford radio

Question
The amp we have has only RCA Pre out input connections. Can we plug into the amp there and cut the other end of the pre-out cables and splice them into the car's speaker wires for input to the amp? (I think preout cables actually use 2 wires per cable - we could splice the 2 wires in each cable to the 2 wires at each speaker. Will that work?

-----Question-----
What are we not seeing in trying to remove our stereo? We want to put a sub woofer and amp in the car. We began disassmbling the pull out trim around the stereos and got stuck in the area between the factory Casette Deck/receiver unit and the CD Player Unit. Everything was plastic pop outs or metal push pin type but we could not get this area to budge. Also, we are hoping to find vacant pre-out connections on the factory unit. Are they there?

If I remember correctly, there are two screws to remove first.
Here's a webpage to show the details. You will also need Ford radio removal tools, available from most stereo shops or auto parts stores.

As for RCA connections, no factory stereos have those. You have  to buy an interface to connect. It will depend if you have a Ford premium stereo or not. An easier solution is to use the speaker level inputs on your sub amp, and tap the rear speaker wires in the back. Then you can hook the turn on wire to accessory power at the fuse box, and not have to remove the head unit at all.

Answer
Pick up a speaker to RCA level converter. They are inexpensive and well worth the money. This can still be used at the rear of the car, at the rear speaker leads. In the interest of noise rejection, I install them right behind the head unit, and run the RCA leads down the opposite side of the car from the power cables.
