Audio Systems: Car audio upgrade, dual voice coil, watts rms

Question
Jerry,

I have a 2002 Nissan Maxima with Bose (terrible) and I am looking to upgrade to a new headunit first. Out of the headunit, I am looking to get CD, MP3, WMA, and Sirius. Plus, I would like for it to be a Double Din so it will look original. Any suggestions? I don't want to spend more than $400 on the headunit.

Then, I have a Dual Voice Coil Memphis 10 inch speaker but no amp. On the speaker it says they recommend a 200RMS amp. Any suggestions on an amp? Do I need to go class D or does it matter? Price, I want to stay around $200. I only need an amp to power the sub right? Thanks

Answer
Hi, Dwight.

This will depend on whether or not you have the navigation system.
Crutchfield says this about the 02 Maxima with Bose:
"Your vehicle is equipped with an upgraded sound system. We recommend that you purchase an adapter to eliminate extensive rewiring when you install your new stereo. Without this adapter, you might have to replace your entire factory sound system, including the speakers."

This 'OEM amplifier adaptor' is about $40.00 and you can check it out here:
http://www.crutchfield.com/S-HgGVwBmSDlU/cgi-bin/prodview.asp?i=142C4NN03

Double DIN may be hard to find.
I would just use an installation adaptor and use a Clarion Single DIN unit such as this DXZ465MP CD receiver for 200.00 (minus a 60.00 rebate for $139.00 total):
http://www.crutchfield.com/S-HgGVwBmSDlU/cgi-bin/ProdView.asp?g=300&I=020DXZ465
It has everything you are looking for plus a two year warranty, and you would be hard pressed to do better with any amount of money for under $400.
A well done single DIN with an adaptor will look very nice in the dash. You can speak with their reps if you must have a double DIN as to what your options are.

As to the amp, there are many that will fit the bill.

Here is a 60 wattx2 Rockford Fosgate for about 129.00, 250 watts RMS brigded @ 4 ohms:
http://www.crutchfield.com/S-HgGVwBmSDlU/cgi-bin/ProdView.asp?g=120&I=575P2502
I know your speaker is rated at 200 RMS but for most speaker applications, it is better on a speaker to run too much (clean) power to it than to try and reef everything you can get out of ANY amp that is not 200 watts RMS brigded. This way you can just bring the amp level down a tad (from RMS rated output settings) to compensate.
*I do not know which model 10" you have (as it may be dual 4 or 2 ohm voice coils). This factor is very important when trying to load it (impedance-wise) to an amplifier, properly.41

Once you purchase the adaptors/components and consider the rebates, this route would run you about $350.00 TOTAL.

You can go to www.crutchfield.com and enter your cars' information and do as you please, but these items are my suggestions.
They have people ready to chat with you online or by 1-888 number to answer any questions and they provide lifetime support for that they sell to you.
I do not work for them but they are the defacto outfitters for aftermarket interfaces to factory systems.
Their Sales Advisor number is 1-888-955-6000

I hope this helps, but let me know if I can be of further assistance... EG with wiring that dual voice coil woofer, for instance.
Good luck and thanks for the question.

Sincerely,
Jerry Mael

Sorry, I forgot to cover this.
As to the type of amp:
Class A or class A/B amplification would be my 1st choice for sound quality.
