Audio Systems: 2 amps, amp fuses, wire guage

Question
how do i wire up two amps? i have 4 12 inch woofers. How do i split the power supply wire to go to both amps? do i need RCA's from both amps to go to the head unit? Do i need to separate ground wires?

Answer
well, if they are 4 exact matching subs and 2 exact matching amps then I'll tell you how to hook them up. if it's a mix and match of different subs and/or 2 different amps then please save yourself the time and dont even try,  it will sound horrible.
Assuming they are matching pieces of equipment,

STEP 1. GROUND: you can ground both amps through a common ground stud through the frame of the car or you can ground both amps on their own ground studs.  Grounds are very important to be tight and on unpainted metal so make sure that you sand the paint off and use a bolt with a nut on the other end you can crank down tight.  I like to paint over them when done so they dont rust and corrode.

Step 2 your main power wire will have to be fat enough to support the current that both amps will provide or you will have to pull another wire.  To find out, most amplifiers will have fuses in them.  just total them all up.  if both of your amps have 2 25 amp fuses each then you have 100 amps.  if each amplifier has 3 30 amp fuses then you have 180 amps.  take a look at this chart to see if your wire fits the bill to take the load of the 2 amps

if not, either replace it with a thicker wire or run a second wire.  if your wire supports the amps you can get a simple dual amp fuse block that take the 1 wire in and has 2 wires out.  you can get these on ebay or even walmart depending on the amps and wire guage required.

as for the remote wire from the head unit you can either make a Y shape out of wire and a wirenut or some other kind of splice in the middle. or you can just jumper from head unit to one amp and then to the next amp.

The RCAs you can get Y adapters at radioshack.  or some amps have output jacks on them so you can go from the head unit to the first amp's input jacks, then from that amp's output jacks to the next amp's input jacks.

Tell me if you need any more info than that!
Good luck and please let me know how it goes!
