Audio Systems: Car speaker base part not working, infinity speakers, automibile

Question
I received a pair of Infinity speakers, about 9 months ago, bought on Ebay by my son. The model is 6002i, 6 1/2 in., two way, 60W with 180W peak. When installing, one base speaker was not working too well. But now the base part doe not work at all. The built-in tweeter works fine though. Is it possible to repair the speaker? It is installed in the back of a Mercedes, with two other speakers in the front. No power booster (yet). There is a fade ajustment incorporated in the car wiring.

Answer
The 6002i is a two-way coaxial speaker intended for mounting a an automibile with infinite baffle backloading.

If you are sure the tweeter is working fine and the 6.5" driver is failing, I would say it has been overpowered and the voice coil is loose on the coil form (which causes a rattling type sound) or the connection is intermittent (which cases the speaker to cut off and on).

The paper diaphram and voice coil can be rebuilt by any good speaker lab that specializes in rebuilding speakers.  If you do not have on in your city you can always ship it to another city where the can rebuild it.  Most big cities have rebuilders.

You can send it back to Infinity, but the cost will be much higher than a local shop.

Use switchboard.com or other online yellow page searches to find a speaker rebuilder.
