Question -
I have a stereo from a 2004 dodge ram and i want to convert it into a ass beating system for my boathouses work out room...i have 6 high quality speakers to add to the mix and i dont feel like shelling out alot of money for a converter to power it so i was going to go the route of using an old computer PSU...mybe just for testing untill i get enough cash....but anyways which power wire go where? i have little experience with this kind of stuff...i only build computers so this is kinda out of my relm...i dont have my wire harness yet, but im assuming when i get it itlll make this alot easier to understand...any help is very apreciated

well as far as "ass beating"  you are going to need alot of current to make alot of sound which 1 psu isnt going to do.  you can try all you want but when it comes down to it there's a simple formula:

watts = Volts times amps

if you have a PSU that puts out 25 amps at 12 volts you just need to multiply them together which is 300 watts.  unfortunatly a class a/b amplifier is at best 60% efficient so you only get 60% of that 300 which is 180 watts.   to make matters worse every time there is a decent beat in the music the amp will pull a spike which most PSUs are engineered to shut off for so the thing may just keep shutting off on you!

you say you want to run 6 speakers?  you have amplifiers or just a head unit or both?  can you list the models of the amps and head unit and speakers, then I can tell you if it's even feasable.

as far as wiring goes, any yellow and any black will give you 12 volts from a PSU.  then in the large motherboard connector will usually be a green wire,  just tie that to any black and it will start up.

Good luck and let me know if you need more help.

not sure what you mean by "converter"  you mean a power converter to run the amp you have?  do you mean a reciever?

Sorry,

Answer
well, just the head unit will probably run fine off a PSU but remember the head unit is only like 15 watts per channel so again the reciever is better.  you only get more wattage when you use a dedicated amplifier which when you get up there as you can see by the previous messages just becomes too much for a PSU to handle.
Good luck!
