Audio Systems: Kenwood KDC 7007 cd/receiver-Broken, kenwood kdc, voltage doubler

Question
I own a Kenwood KDC 7007 cd/receiver.  When I start my car, the
face flips over and the radio turns on but the display is off and all
of the buttons on the face DO NOT work.  I can't change the
volume, I can't turn it off,  I can't do any thing with it.  I've tried
resetting it (pressing the small reset button on the face), and i've
tried disconnecting the power from the car battery.  Both of those
attempts have left me in the same boat.  Any suggestions?

Answer
You have a couple of choices.  Take it into a shop for repair or try to repair it by yourself.

To start a repair of your own you must be skilled as a technician.

Here is what I would do:
ONE:  Remove the unit from the vehicle and bench test it.  Take long wires from the battery so you can operate it externally from the car.

TWO:  Use a standalone speaker not connected to the car and hook it up to one of the amplfier outputs so you can check for sound output.  You will need an antenna connection if you are testing the radio section, or a cd if you are satisfied to check just cd audio.  Once you have audio in the one channel, go around and check out each channel.

THREE:  If the unit bench checks okey, then you have wiring problems in the car.  Probably power wire; check the 12v (with a vom) going to the unit.  There are two, sometimes three, power connections.  One is just for powering the clock and front panel lights, etc.  The othe powers the amplifiers and internal electronics.  One may be to operate a power antenna, etc.

FOUR: If the unit does not bench test out then you have to get inside and find out what has gone wrong with it.  Could be a burned power link, bad voltage doubler or regulator, etc., etc.  Many possibilities.  A real troubleshooter can find the problem easily.  If the repair/damage is severe you may want to just replace the unit rather than spend a large sum on it.

Maybe this will get you started.  Let me know if you need more.
