Audio Systems: Changing car system into home system, suround sound speakers, crx honda

Question
Ok to be honest with you, after i get the amp and the cables, im just looking for nothing special as far as speakers.....Im just looking for a common reciever nothing real fancy or too expensive, im a college student with not exactly a huge bank account but a middle of the road reciever and speakrs would be fine.  I do like the sony suround sound speakers with a reciever center speaker, two fronts and two backs if you want could you suggest maybe two or three that you think would run well with the setup.....also how do i plut the behringer into the reciever, are those the RCA/ to 1/4" cable you showed me?  Anything else you think would help the set up process would be awsome....I'll probably buy the amp and reciever within the next month and cant wait to have the best beats in the house! -------------------------

Question -
I think i may have given you the wrong idea of the amps needed.  I use 250 to guarentee that nothing will blow up in the car......however the fuse that came with the amp is 100 (twice the 50 you suggested) so maybe if i get the fifty i can run the amp at half power which is still rediculous loud.....In my car i cant even turn the amp up past 3/4 cause i still dont have enough power (yes yes i know i was a retard for buying this amp.....and all i have is a little crx honda to run it).  So what are your thoughts of finding the 50 amp output....If you can, could you give me a little more info on running that setup and what all i would need to buy, if not that link you gave me to the house amp/whatever it is is looking prety antising im not gonna lie, lol! thanks for your help

Question -
You have answered this question in a later topic reguarding putting a car system in the dorm room...However, i think i have a case different from the ones before.  I curently have a Kicker Kx1200.1 mono amplifier and 4 kicker comp CVR's in my car....I also have a dry cell battery and a 3 farad capacitor.  I would like to know how i can hook all this up in my frat room and run the amplifier.  I would use the cap and could get another dry cell battery if needed.  I dont really care the cost, I just had NO idea on how i can possibly get that much power to run the amplifier.  i have 250 amp fuse in my car to run it and an upgraded alternator, and still have some power issues.  Even if i cant use it to its full potential, I still feel that a frat room with 4 kicker comps.....If you have any help that would be great, thank you for your time....

Answer -
well as cool as it would be to have car stuff in your dorm and even though you have it and would like to use it I have to say that you will have a very hard time powering it properly.  Trust me I've tried many times.  the battery and capacitor will help alot but you will still have a few problems.  problem 1 is that the biggest power supply you can really buy is 50 amps and is quite expensive. at 50 amps you'll be able to run the amplifier all day at a reasonable level without the battery and capacitor but if you really crank it it will shut off.  the battery will keep that from happening (maybe, more on that later) but eventually the battery will go dead and the power supply will shut off.  the capacitor wont help at all except filter spikey bass peaks.  The 2nd problem you will have is that a battery is always less voltage than what you are charging it with.  in other words if you have a battery that is normally at 12.5Volts you will need the power supply to be at 14 volts.  if the power supply is 12.5Volts the battery will drop down to about 11 over time.  what this all means is that once the battery looses even .5 of a volt the power supply is suppling the majority of the load and any bass peaks will most likely shut the powersupply off.
Like I said I've tried all kinds of crazy contraptions to make this work.  there is only one way to make it work right and that is to have a power supply that is equal or greater to the demand the amp can put on it.  if your amplifier requires 250 amps you will need a 250amp power supply.  GOOD LUCK finding one!
I am running 4 12" infinity betas in my home theater and they are all powered with one beautifull solution.  this guy right here:

$320 bucks for a 2500 watt amp!!! think of it as buying a fantastic power supply for $320 and getting a new amp for free!
Trust me, no matter how creative you get you will end up spending more money for something that doesnt work as well as this thing.  It's a rediculously overengineered piece of machinery and they are practically givving it away for the price.
Please let me know what you do and feel free to ask any more questions if you like.

well even so, at 100 amps you will not find a power supply under 1000 bucks that can make that kind of power.  not only that but it's inefficient.  the amplifier has a power suppy in it that is designed to convert 12-14.4 volts up to about 60.  so you're going from your outlet's 120 volt down to 12-14.4 volts to the amp, then the amp is going to convert it again back up to 60 or so for use.  the 50 amp power supply is big ugly and about 300 bucks.  and having large batteries and caps indoors is very dangerous as well. JUST GET THE BEHRINGER AMP!!!!  the ohms seem right too for it, the comp CVRs are dual 2 ohms right?  So you put the 2 coils of each sub in series to make each sub a 4 ohm load.  then you put 2 subs in series to make and 8 ohm load, then you put those 2 sets of subs in parallel to make a 4 ohm mono load.  thats what the behringer amp puts out the most to, 4 ohms bridged baby!!! trust me I've tried and tried to run car amps indoors and it just doesnt make sense with stuff like the behringer ep2500 around.  you know you can drive your car everywhere in reverse too but just cuz you CAN doesnt mean you SHOULD know what I mean?
let me know what you do.

you're not bugging me at all.  I like questions like this much better than questions like:
"I have a 1965 elcamino with an 8 track player that doesnt work when I slam the trunk, what do I do?"
or
"why shouldn't I put tweeters under my seat"
stuff like that.
or questions where people type about 6 paragraphs but theres really no question at all!!!
go with the 2500 for sure.  it's peak power so the 2500 is only like 1200 RMS and the 1500 model is like 700 RMS.  the 2500 model is also a more efficient amp at like 90% efficient like a class D amp!  the 1500 model is a class A/B amp so its only like 50% effiecient so it draws more power from your outlet and just blows it off in heat not sound.  the 2500 is a better build all around.
a reciever is definatly a good idea. you need something to give you volume control and be able to select sources.  You'll need some regular speakers wont you?  you cant just run subs by themselvs it will just sound like bass and nothing else.  so the reciever will give you volume controll that will go up and down evenely for the subs and the main speakers if you know what I mean.  yes the behringer amp plugs right into the wall, no power suppy nessesary.  it does however have 1/4" plugs instead of standard RCAs so you will need adapters like this to go from the amp to the "sub out" on the reciever:

http://www.musiciansfriend.com/product/Mogami-Pure-Patch-RCA-to-14-Mono-HiDefini

the behringer amp in bridged mono mode will NOT combine left and right stereo into mono like a car amp will so you'll need the reciever for this too (built into almost every reciever so dont worry about it!) I can make some recomendations for a reciever if you tell me the budget and needs.  Also recomend some great main speakers to go with it.  In fact I have a friend that I built a setup using 2 EP2500s, one to run the subs and 1 to run a set of Infinity Primus 360s. KILLER SETUP!!

Answer
yah tha cable will go from the reciever's "sub out" jack and into the behringer's input jack.  The behringer has a row of little switches on the back for wether you run it bridged and wether you use it's built in limiters and stuff.  It's really very easy.  I would sugest an onkyo reciever since I know that most if not all of their recievers have crossovers built in just like you'd have in a car stereo.  so the sub out on the reciever would already have been put through a lowpass filter and the main speakers can have a highpass filter as well to get them playing nice with eachother.
this guy's only $260 and has the sub out connection you would need to run the behringer.

there's also beauties like this one:

http://www.crutchfield.com/S-aF8PafWw3BB/cgi-bin/ProdView.asp?g=10420&tab=moreph

that has preamp outputs for all channels so you can run multiple amps for all of your speakers.  that's what I'm doing.  I have a rack of 6 amps coming off my onkyo 989 and it's amazing!
as for the main speakers you will need something pretty powerful to compete with all that bass so its just doenst sound like mud.  I highly recomend the infinity primus 360

Let me know how it goes
