Audio Systems: Amp & Sub, guage wire, 12w7

I have a Jl Audio 1000/1 amp and a 12w7 when I have the bass all the way up I get a wierd smell and my amp gets hot. Is there something I can do to change that? I like a lot of bass but I don't like the smell and I don't want to blow the sub because I just got it and I just don't want to blow it. Please help.

well if you really beat on the sub it will get hot inside and can make a smell.  the amp will get hot, that's normal.  make sure your ground is good and very tight and atached to the car on unpainted metal.  an amp will get hotter with poor power.  you should have at least 4 guage, preferably 2 guage wire for this.  8 guage wont cut it.  a capacitor may help the amp a little but if the sub is reaching its limits and you need more maybe you're in the market for a 2nd sub.  if you do get a 2nd sub GET THE SAME EXACT KIND!!!  people sometimes try to mix sub types and it ALWAYS ends up sounding like crap.
