Audio Systems: Tape deck, playback head, sony tc

Question

  Hello again Cleggsan!

Get ready for a retro question.

I feel like Im losing my mind!

After 20 years my old TEAC dual tape deck died and I replaced it with a sony tc-we475.

I cannot dub from cassette to cassette.Whenever I hit record on the record side the play side plays but with no sound therefore nothing for the record side to pickup. When I press stop on the record side the sound comes through from the play side.

I have tried everything I know as far as hookups go.I must be missing something.

Thank you in advance for your help.

Answer
The owners manual can be downloaded from this URL:

http://esupport.sony.com/US/perl/model-documents.pl?mdl=TCWE475&LOC=3

Then, go to page 14 of your manual which gives the detailed instructions on how to dub from A to B.

Are you sure you put the blank in B and the tape to be copied in A?

Are you sure you sure the record tabs have not been removed in the blank tape?

If, after double checking everything, it still does not record it may be defective.  Does mouth B play a previously recorded tape properly?  If not, the playback head may be defective - or its amplifier.

So, check it out again and let me know the result.

Nice to hear from you, as always.
