Audio Systems: car stereo no worky, jeep wrangler yj, pioneer car stereo

Question
The vehicle is a 1993 jeep wrangler YJ. I am pretty sure there isn't an amp anywhere, and there are no signs of a premium stereo. When I plugged the stereo in today there was sound for a while and then it stopped again?!!.
cheers. Mark.

Thanks Mark, I didn't realise the memory wire was a second power supply and apparantly it was a broken fuse that was preventing the power from being delivered to the stereo. Unfortunatly the stereo now works but I still have the original problem of no audio. I can not get anything from the second stereo and therefore summise it is hooped. Any suggestions for the sound or could it be time for a new stereo?
cheers. Mark.

I had a pioneer car stereo in my jeep that had been profesionally installed. Recently it started cutting out and randomly restarting whenever it felt like it. I couldn't find a direct fault such as bad connection so I removed it and put in my old Kenwood stereo. Still no joy. Tested all the power on both there is power going to the stereo from the harness but nothing when I clip in the stereo. Tonight I put back in my pioneer stereo and I have nothing at all now from that one. Again there is power coming from the harness and all the wires are hooked up same as before. Any suggestions. Cheers. Mark.

An after market stereo needs 3 power connections to work.  one is the ground, one is posative when the key is on or off for memory/settings backup.  the other is the 2nd posative that is only on when the key is in the "on" and "run" postitions. this is typically the main power for a stereo.
I would use a meter to veryify that all 3 of these work, I know you said you tested the power so I apologize if you've already done that but let me know specifically that you tested all 3 lines with a meter.
If you need help on how to test them let me know I'll be happy to help with that as well.
Let me know.

ok, so if you have 2 stereos that look like they're working (screen is showing time rolling when playing a cd) but you get no sound, My guess would be that your car has an amplifier somewhere (some cars come with them hidden somewhere) and there may be a blow fuse for this as well or it may have died which they seem to be very prone to. what is your year make and model vehicle and are there any signs of a "premium" stereo like the names bose or infinity anywhere or 6 speakers instead of 4, stuff like that?

Answer
I would test the speaker wires using a AA battery. disconnect the harness from the stereo and remove the speaker wires from the splice. Take a new AA battery and put it across one set of speaker wires at at time (just strike it quikly, dont leave it on long) you should hear a click from the speakers, each set at a time while you connect the wires.  if there are no clicks then you've either got the wrong wires or there is an amp somewhere that's not on.
Hope my explaination of what to do makes sense there, if not let me know,  sorry it took me a while to get back to you, things are crazy these past few days!
